6 signs you should be taking probiotics

6 signs you should be taking probiotics

In several articles I have mentioned the benefits of eating fermented foods, such as unpasteurized sauerkraut. However, not all of us can manage to eat probiotics from food on a daily basis and some of us need more probiotics to restore the gut balance. Ideally we should take probiotics every day. But what are the 6 signs you should be taking probiotics?

One of the main reasons, people will take a probiotics is after an antibiotic. That is a good thing to do, since antibiotics completely destroy your healthy gut bacteria. Even if you took an antibiotic 6 years ago, you can still feel the effect of the destroyed bacteria. In that case you will need to replenish the good bacteria in the gut.

Remember, that around 80% of your immune system is in your gut. And, 95% of your serotonin levels (your ‘’happy’’ hormones) are produced in your gut. Some serious business is going on in your gut.

There are some signs that can indicate you are dealing with an imbalance in your gut. These can be:

  •  skin issues
  • irregular mood
  • erratic sleep patterns
  • strong cravings for sugar and other processed foods
  • bloating
  • gas
  • constipation
  • diarrhea
  • cramping after meals
  • often sick
  • malabsorption of nutrients

These are just some of the symptoms of an imbalanced gut.

Good health starts with your gut. Your gut health influences the health of your entire body, both physical and mental.

What do probiotics do?

✔️ They make sure harmful bacteria and micro organism don’t go crazy

✔️ They aid in digestion and nutrient absorption so you can ‘’receive’’ all the vitamins, minerals, fats and amino acids from the food you eat

✔️ They boost your immune system

✔️ They make sure the bad bacteria will not over grow and therefore preventing them to cause infection, inflammation and disease

✔️ They improve mental health, focus and memory

The bad news is that most of us have signs of a depleted gut flora.

You can find probiotics in a lot of fermented foods, but when you need a lot of probiotics (you need to rebuild the good bacteria) the concentration from food might be too low for you. The gut flora is totally depleted and will need a higher dose. Then you will need to look for a probiotic supplement.

6 signs you should be taking probiotics

1. You are on antibiotics or took antibiotics a year ago

Antibiotic = “anti-life”

They are made to kill bacteria (all of them), the good and the bad.

2. You have digestive issues

When you are eating healthy and still have a distressed gut (bloating, sugar and carb cravings, gas etc) it is time for probiotics.

A healthy diet is one without (as little as possible) processed, packaged and fried foods, dairy, gluten, sugar and soy. Eat real whole foods.

3. Food Poisoning

This means your gut was exposed to bad bacteria so it’s time to fight the bad guys.

4. You struggle with your skin condition

I wrote about this before, but how we look is a direct reflection of what is going on internally. So your gut is not at its best when you suffer from acne, rashes, psoriasis, eczema etc.

5. You have a weak immunity

Are you always sick? Healthy bacteria will make your immune system strong.

When your gut is ok, your risk for illness diminishes dramatically.

6. You have mood disorders

Our gut has more nerves than our brain. No wonder the health of our gut is closely related to the health of our brain.

The better the state your gut is in the better the function of your neurotransmitters are.

How do you make sure you get in those good bacteria’s?
