The Top 5 Lessons from Self-Help Books

I have always been a bookworm, but I don’t read everyting. Of course I love anything health- and food related, but I also love self-help books. There are so many self-help books on so many topics available nowadays. There are self-help books on how to grow a business, how to get creative, how to deal with eating problems, how to love yourself, how to find your life purpose… You name it; it’s out there. As a holistic health coach reading tons of self-help books has helped me a lot in understanding the root of many problems. However, what I noticed is that there is a common message in all of the self-help books I have read. And today I’m sharing with you the top 5 lessons from self-help books, because there are thousands of self-help books out there, but they almost all have a common lesson throughout them.

The top 5 lessons from self-help books

  1. There is always a higher power at work on your side

In each and every biography that I have read (from Maya Angelou to Steve Jobs) they share a similar truth. We should all do our best work and always trust in a higher power that is much bigger than you.

The higher power at work (call it God, the universe or whatever you believe) is working right beside you. Always. In moments of discouragement, we shouldn’t despair. Many books say that you should remember that you have already survived everything that has happened to you so far. God’s/the universe’s helping hand is always there, waiting to help you as soon as you center yourself and accept the truth and acknowledge that there is a higher power working on your side.

  1. Your thoughts are everything

In As a Man Thinketh” (Tony Robbins’s favorite book and what also might have been the original text behind The Secret), the author James Allen writes that we create our world with our thoughts. It’s very true and very simple. You create your reality. If you choose to feel bad, you will feel bad. It’s all about how you look at life. All your feelings (good or bad) start in your thoughts, but every single thought can be changed. He writes we should every day focus on what you want and how you want to feel. Visualize, because The Law of Attraction works like the law of gravity. Everything you are right now is a manifestation of your thoughts. So guard your thoughts, don’t talk yourself down and get rid of negative people. The book The Magic of Thinking Big” also emphasis that you are what you think. It’s a great book by the way.

  1. Take full responsibility for your life

This is for example Jack Canfield’s ”The Success Principles”. It comes down to owning every part of your life, also your mistakes. There is no point in blaming others (and giving others control) over your circumstances. It never helped anyone. So to create a life you really want, you’ll have to take full responsibility for it. Don’t blame others, your past, your circumstances, but stand up for your life. There’s no monopoly on success. It’s all up to you.

  1. Always love yourself

InLife Loves You”, Louise Hay says we should look in the mirror, look into our eyes every day and say, “I love you. I really love you.” You are worthy simply because you are. When self love lacks, many problems can arise. But when you truly love yourself, you don’t care for example what others think about you. You allow yourself to be the real you. You will inspire others to love themselves too, you will take better care of yourself and people want to be around you. Self love keeps you present and it allows you to reject self-sabotaging behavior. You will also stop comparing yourself to others, because you are not busy with what other people are doing.

  1. You are allowed to be anything you want to be

Have you noticed that if someone loves something, he/she is good at it (is given a talent)? Your goal is to use your gifts and capabilities to share and serve others. You have an obligation to figure out what you want/can be. As such, you will contribute to the world and will live regret free. It doesn’t mean you can’t make money with your passion, because you’re also worthy to receive the blessings (financial blessings) that will come when you bring value to others.

But guess what….

Every person is special. Your life matters. Your dreams matter too. It’s up to you to find out what your dreams are and to take action. No matter what, believe it. When you really believe, you will always find a way.

What I also noticed is that the ‘’secret’’ to all self-help books is that we are all terrified. We all feel afraid at some point in our life and are uncertain about many things in life. The only thing we can do is just the best we know. But when you apply the above principles of self-love, action, and ownership this can help you a lot.
