A banana smoothie substitute you must try

A delicious banana smoothie substitute you must try with sweet potatoes, almond milk, cashews and goji berries. It is incredible rich and creamy!

When you are familiar with smoothie recipes, you know that bananas are almost always on the list of ingredients. Bananas are healthy, a great way to give you energy, and it makes a smoothie sweet and creamy. Ice creams and even chocolate smoothies do well with a boost of banana. On top of that bananas are inexpensive, easy to keep, there is no washing involved and they are also full with minerals like potassium and tryptophan (which converts to good-mood-inducing seratonin). So, yes I am certainly a member of the banana smoothie club! Today however, I’m making a smoothie with a banana substitute you must try.

What can I use instead of bananas in smoothies?

Not everyone likes bananas. Or what about those with allergies, that need to controle their blood sugar, or those who just want a change in their smoothie routine? Fortunately, there are many replacements depending on the smoothie recipe. In fruity smoothies, all frozen fruits work really well, such as a pineapple or a mango. In nutty, chocolate, or creamy smoothies, chia seeds, oatmeal or an avocado with a little sweetener such as a date is a great choice. But there’s one ingredient that is being left out: the sweet potato!

sweet potatoes

Cooked sweet potatoes are smooth and sweet. Indeed, you can transfer all that goodness in a smoothie, making it velvety and rich. Your smoothie will be super creamy and full with vitamins and fibers. Sweet potatoes go very well with chocolate, and even with fruit smoothies like acai, blueberry, pineapple, or apple. Either bake a couple of fresh sweet potatoes, or use a canned variety (BPA-free) if you are in a rush. I always prefer the fresh version though.

As a super general rule I use 1/3 cup baked or cooked sweet potato puree to substitute 1 fresh medium sized banana. You can probably also blend this smoothie with some water as a base, but I prefer a nut milk such as almond milk or this fast version of almond milk.

Whether you’re looking for a smoothie for autumn, if you hate bananas, or just want to switch-up your smoothie routine, you’ll probably like this incredible rich smoothie recipe.
