A smoothie is nothing without a little hint of sweetness. I preferable use mostly vegetables in my green smoothie, and  try to keep the fruit content low. While green smoothies are what I drink most of the time, sometimes I just want to switch things up.

The number one fruit to make a smoothie sweeter and creamier is the good old (frozen) banana. But what if you don’t like bananas or are a bit fed up with banana based smoothies? This blueberry smoothie recipe got you covered. The secret ingredient for this smoothie is a vegetable! Frozen sweet potato is the key to an luscious creamy smoothie.

A smoothie without bananas?

Can you imagine you don’t like bananas? I personally can. I only like a banana for example that isn’t too ripe. Otherwise, I honestly don’t like the taste of bananas.

Or what about if you are allergic to bananas?

It also makes me wonder why almost all smoothie recipes call for a banana? Of course, I understand that (frozen) bananas add a lot of instant sweetness and creaminess, but my friends you have to try the alternative.

You may never want to go back to your classic smoothie recipe with banana. Also, bananas are a fruit and sweet potatoes are considered a veggie. This could be one of those typical win-win situations.

Blueberry Smoothie

Blueberries are an amazing fruit. These little berries contain some good antioxidants. The other ingredients are sweet potato, plant-based milk, nuts, and a date. There are some other optional ingredients you could add, such as a Brazil nut for selenium or cinnamon for a hint of warmth and sweetness.

This blueberry smoothie is currently one of my favorite smoothie recipes. As a quick easy on-the-go breakfast or as a snack. It’s the basic recipe in the best way. Refreshing, nourishing, creamy and just so delicious!

Why you should chew your smoothie

The best thing about smoothies is that you can easily get in a lot of nutrients. But this is also the downside. We chew are food for a reason. When we chew our food we are producing certain enzymes in our mouth, which is the first stage of digestion. So chewing and letting the ingredients mix with your saliva actually helps the digestive process.

A smoothie actually does the opposite, because with a smoothie you no longer have to chew your food. But you can still activate those enzymes and help the absorption and assimilation of nutrients. All you have to do is simply chew on your smoothie. If you have trouble doing so, consider presenting your smoothie in a bowl with toppings. Or mix the toppings in your smoothie when you are on-the-go.

Some topping ideas are:

  • Coconut flakes
  • Cacao nibs
  • Goji berries
  • Chopped nuts
  • Chopped dates
  • Pumpkin- or sunflower seeds

How To Make A Blueberry Smoothie Without A Banana

This blueberry smoothie is dairy-free, vegan and sweetened with a Medjool date. But the ”banana substitute” also creates an overall sweeter taste. Sweet potatoes are deliciously sweet and frozen they will make this smoothie super creamy.

Unlike regular potatoes, sweet potatoes can actually be eaten raw. However, for this recipe I would recommend to first boil the sweet potato and then freeze it.

After that all you have to do is add the ingredients to a blender and blend them up for a luscious, creamy, plant-based smoothie.

Blueberries are deliciously fresh and abundant during spring and summer. So typically throughout the rest of the year I will use frozen berries.

How to Make A Blueberry Smoothie

If you are making smoothies, soups or sauces on a regular basis, I do suggest investing in a high-power blender to make your smoothie as smooth as possible. I personally use a Vitamix blender.

Frozen blueberries contain a good amount of antioxidants + phytonutrients and gives this smoothie a beautiful deep purple color.

Frozen sweet potato is a banana substitute that will give this smoothie extra nutritional benefits, including fiber. It will also make this smoothie creamy and naturally sweet.

A Medjool date will create a little bit of extra creaminess, fiber and a sweet caramel flavor. Add one more date if you think your smoothie is not sweet enough.

Cashew nuts have their own unique nutrition profile to give this smoothie a boost. It will also make this smoothie a bit thicker.

A plant-based milk is what makes this smoothie smooth. Try to go for the unsweetened version to avoid unnecessary added sugars. I like to use soy milk, since it has a more neutral flavor.

For a sweeter smoothie:

add more Medjool dates to taste.

For a thinner smoothie:

add a splash of more plant-based milk or water. You can also use fresh blueberries or sweet potato puree (not frozen).

For an even thicker smoothie:

after blending add in a few tablespoons of rolled oats, or 1-2 tablespoons of chia seeds or flax seeds and let sit for about 15 minutes. This will also help the chewing process mentioned earlier.

Toss everything into your blender and blend until smooth. This normally takes less than a minute in a high-speed blender. Enjoy your delicious, thick, cold smoothie immediately.
