SUBSTITUTIONS AND VARIATIONS

There are a few substitutions and variations possible on this coffee mocktail.

Make it caffeine-free
While this drink is alcohol-free, it is not caffeine-free. To make this drink caffeine-free, replace the coffee or espresso with a caffeine-free coffee.

Extra punch
If you want to keep the drink alcohol-free but miss an extra punch, add a slice of fresh ginger (sliced) to the cold coffee brew. The difference is subtle, but it gives this mocktail a nice punch.

Sweetener
Feel free to use any other sweetener for this drink. I recommend using a syrup-based sweetener, such as maple syrup or agave syrup.

Warming and cooling
This drink can be served all year round, but you can adjust the recipe slightly to make it more cooling or warming. Omit the mint extract and replace it with almond extract or a small pinch of cinnamon to make this drink warming. For a literally more warming drink, you can omit the ice cubes and serve the drink in a smaller glass.

FINAL TIPS

Before we relax and sip our drinks, here are a few tips.

The taste will mostly stay the same if you use caffeine-free coffee. Only coffee powder replacements, such as Dandy Blend, will change the flavor. It’s a personal preference if you like that combination, but it’s worth a try!

Serve this drink in a large glass to accommodate the ice cubes. The more ice cubes you use, the more the layers will stay separated. Eventually, after a few good stirs, the drink will turn completely brown.

Make the cold brew the night before and keep it in the fridge so you can whip up this drink in less than 5 minutes.
