Golden Turmeric Milk and Turmeric Latte

Golden milk or turmeric milk is a delicious nourishing treat and since some of you are not familiar with this amazing warming and soothing drink, winter is the best moment to share this recipe with you. Golden turmeric milk and turmeric latte are my favorite (winter) drinks.

When you combine turmeric with a bit of sweetness it turns into a warm, slightly spicy, and earthy flavor. This winter you should definitely try this inflammatory fighting drink.

Ayurvedic practice

Traditionally golden turmeric milk is an Ayurvedic practice. Turmeric is also a traditional Indian spice. You might not be so familiar with turmeric, but many cultures believe its healing properties. Turmeric is used to help for many health issues. From a cold, flu, sore throat, stomach pain and to wound healing due to its antibacterial and antimicrobial benefits. Golden turmeric milk contains antioxidants, it has anti inflammatory benefits, and healthy fats (when you add a tablespoon of coconut oil).

In traditional recipes, you will always need to add black peppercorns as well, because this will enhance the absorption of curcumin (the main component in turmeric).

The more you will drink golden turmeric milk the more you will find yourself pumping up the turmeric and lowering the amount of sweetness. It is that addictive! The flavors of turmeric, black peppercorns, cinnamon, ginger, and (home made) almond milk go together so beautifully.

Description

A warm and comforting golden turmeric milk (latte) with a hint of sweetness and spices.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (homemade) almond milk
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup or 1 in water soaked Medjool date
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 cinnamon stick or 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • small pinch of black pepper
  • pinch of grated ginger (fresh is best)

Instructions

  1. GOLDEN TURMERIC MILK
  2. Simply pour all ingredients into a small pan or heat resistant cup and bring to a light boil. Don’t walk away, because milk can boil fast! Whisk well to combine all ingredients. Then reduce heat to low and simmer for about 15 minutes, the longer it will simmer the stronger the flavors will be.
  3. Strain the milk if you have large pieces of ginger, cinnamon, peppercorns, date etc. Serve warm with a dash of cinnamon if you wish.
  4. TURMERIC LATTE
  5. Add all ingredients into a blender and blend for about 1 minute. That’s it! Add 1 tablespoon of coconut oil if you would like it a bit thicker like a traditional latte and if you want to enhance the absorption of turmeric even more.
  6. VARIATIONS ON GOLD MILK & LATTE:
  7. • Add 2 whole cardamom pods while the gold milk is boiling
  8. • Add 2 pieces of anise when serving
  9. • Use more maple syrup or Medjool dates if you like it sweet
  10. • Add vanilla extract to taste

Notes

* You can use whatever milk you prefer or even water, but I prefer coconut or almond milk.**If you use almondmilk like I did you could add 1 tablespoon of coconut oil to make the milk a bit more warming and ”heavier”.*** Strain the milk if you’re left with chunks.
The longer you simmer the golden turmeric milk, the stronger the flavor is.
