How To Save A Juice Or Smoothie

I’m often asked how to save a smoothie or juice for later. Fresh is, of course, always best. Especially when it comes to a juice (not prepared with a slowjuicer) it’s best to consume it immediately. However, it’s a little bit different for a smoothie with fibers. Making a double batch to have an extra smoothie for later is ideal.

So, in general, smoothies keep longer than juices do. Usually, a juice (prepared with a slow juicer) will keep for about 12 hours using the method below, while a smoothie will keep up to 24 hours. Always use your eyes and nose to tell. Weird smell? Dark brown? Don’t drink it.

How to save a smoothie or juice?

  • Store your drink in a glass container with an airtight lid (such as a Mason jar). Fill the container to the rim to prevent air being trapped in the jar. Air will oxidize the nutrients in your smoothie (oxidizing will degrade the nutrients in your smoothie, making it less nutritious).
  • Seal your container tightly and store it immediately in the refrigerator.

Bonus: Add lemon juice to your smoothie or juice as this will work as a preservative. The extra vitamin C will also help prevent oxidation.

Enjoy your green smoothie/juice!
