Vegan Hotspots in New York

Recently I visited New York with mainly one goal: trying as many vegan hotspots in the city as I could. This has been quite a success since I can share 11 vegan hotspots in New York with you. I had an amazing time in New York and I hope that with this video and hotspot list I can share with you my experience and take you back with me to all the food I have enjoyed.

Thank you so much for everyone on Instagram who gave me tips of must visit vegan hotspots! It helped me out alot!

The first hotel was located Midtown and I had the best time there. This hotel is a dream and the location was perfect. The moment I stepped out in the morning to get some fresh fruit I felt at home in the middle of New York without feeling like a tourist.

After some days we moved to the next hotel, because we also wanted to stay in Chinatown for a bit and be close to areas such as Soho. This hotel is perfect for that.

Ashley’s Fine Foods

My first recommendation is not a hotspot, but just a tip if you have a hotel in the Midtown area. I visited Ashley’s Fine Foods on a daily basis. They sell super fresh precut fruit (I loved their super sweet mangos) and juices such as beetroot juice. Of course, you can get juices anywhere in New York, but just three steps away from our hotel this place was really amazing to have nearby. The hubby was also quite impressed with their coffee. Also don’t try these cookies… I warned you. You will go back for more (they sell ALL the flavors). They also had some other yummy snacks such a seaweed chips. I also bought every day a kombucha. They sell my favorite brand Health Ade.

The Cinnamon Snail

The first hotspot in New York was Cinnamon Snail. Starting as a food truck but now located in the PENNSY (a modern food court) ”The Cinnamon Snail” is the place to go for a sweet treat.

The vegan menu at The Cinnamon Snail include open face joints (Korean Barbeque Seitan or Lemongrass 5 Spice Seitan), ”samiches” (Thai BBQ Tempeh or Maple Mustard Tempeh), burgers (Gouchujang Burger or Beastmode Burger Deluxe) and on any given day they usually have about 25 different vegan donuts and pastries to choose from….. The donut options include Peanut Butter Blondies, Gluten Free Maca Cinnamon Cake, Coconut Cider, Almond Maple ”Bacon”, Thai Basil Coconut Glaze, Raspberry Cheesecake, Apple Cider, Lemon Curd and many more options. I don’t think I have ever been to a place with such a variety of vegan donuts.

I had a sandwich and the sweet ”cinnamon snail”. This was so big and so sweet! I had to share it….and I don’t easily share my food.

Tip: Any samich can also be prepared on gluten free millet flax bread or with greens and red quinoa pilaf instead of bread. They also serve delicious side dishes such as mashed potatoes.

Whole Foods Market

I visited a Whole Foods Market in Bedford (Brooklyn), Upper East Side and the one near Bryant Park (my favorite one), but there are many locations. I find that each and every Whole Foods feels a bit different to me. There is a different vibe in each and every Whole Foods, which makes it such a great experience to shop there. Whole Foods offers a lot of organic food, fruits, veggies , snacks, food courts, organic (toxic free) beauty products….Everything a foodie or a health nut can wish for.

Vegan Hotspots in New York

I spent many hours in Whole Foods and if you are anything like me and you love to browse through an organic, healthy food store with plenty of vegan options then Whole Foods is a dream. It’s like your local organic health store, but then bigger, better and with a HUGE collection of basically anything you can wish for.

I think the video will speak for itself… I left behind some clothes to fit in all the food I bought to take back home such as this delicious tea!

The Butcher’s Daughter

My expectations were set very high when I visited The Butcher’s Daughter (a plant-based restaurant, cafe, juice bar and so called ”vegetable slaughterhouse”). This super popular place (among vegans and non-vegans) is according to everyone on the world wide web a must visit place. I found the styling and vibes of this place amazing and especially trendy. Most of you recommended me to order their specialty: smashed avocado toast. But since I thought that would be too ”simple”, I ordered a spicy kale Caesar salad with a golden turmeric milk. Although it wasn’t my best dish ever I would definitely go back to try the avocado toast, since that one seems to be really good. This place must be amazing during brunch time in the weekend.

A quick look at their menu will show you just how amazing this place can be for a brunch or breakfast. They serve almost everything a vegan foodie can wish for. Juices, smoothies, acai bowls, wheatgrass shots, nut milks, soups, salads, waffles, buckwheat pancakes and many sweets are just a few examples.

Beyond Sushi

Sushi is the type of food that so far in my life was either really bad, average (good, but not very creative) or very very very good. And this place can only be described as: beyond sushi. All of their dishes are amazingly creative and delicious. There are several locations of Beyond Sushi and it’s often very crowded. Their soups and spring rolls are also amazingly good. Vegans and non-vegans will love this place. I was very happy to leave the place satiated and with enough energy to continue my walks throughout New York. I will definitely go back to this place when I’m back in New York.

Caravan of Dreams

Caravan of Dreams is an organic vegan restaurant that I probably would have skipped if I would walk by without my hotspot list. And my oh my this place did not let me down. First of all, the waiter was super friendly and polite. New Yorkers are generally already very friendly people, so you can imagine what I mean. This was the only place were food tasted like homemade food. Something we all miss when traveling is home made food, right? Not too salty, not too oily, not too sweet… Everything was just perfect!

The menu is very extensive and is a dream for healthy vegan foodies. I could have easily taken 30 minutes just to browse through the menu. They serve raw food and warm vegan food, but also the most amazing elixirs, fresh coconuts and also pancakes, burritos, chorizo quesadilla (!) and raw pizza’s. All vegan and 95% organic.

Vegan Hotspots in New York

I enjoyed a delicious stir fry with tons of veggies and instead of brown rice I asked for lentils (I’m not eating a lot of those when I travel) and that was no problem! It seems that every dish is so special and made to nourish our body on a cellular level. This place is a dream!

By Chloe.

It was hard editing the New York video and seeing myself eating at by Chloe. Yes, I ate here several times because the food is mind blowing! They also have many locations in New York (Soho and Brooklyn) so well.. I had too, right? 😉

I mostly enjoyed their air fried sweet potato fries. Yum! With a classic burger on a potato bun. Double yum!! The hubby who is always commenting that vegan burgers are so over the top and too much of a good thing, was in heaven. I don’t think I have ever seen him enjoy vegan food this much when traveling as I did at by Chloe. The burgers are perfect! They were so perfect that we ordered them every time. Only later on I realized that the rest of their menu is amazingly good. We went back for breakfasts were I had a delicious berry smoothie (Purple Rainbow) with the fluffiest pancakes ever!! I still would love to know their secret ingredients …to all of their recipes, pretty please.

If I go back to New York without a visit to by Chloe I haven’t really been in New York.

Ok, so how does this vegan heaven look like? Well, think of the best creations for smoothies, burgers, muffins, pancakes, cinnamon rolls, cakes, brownies and fries. Healthy vegans will also love this place because by Chloe. offers detox salads, noodles, burrito’s, and all possible healthy variation on the most delicious juices and smoothies.

Tip: the by Chloe at Bleecker street also has a By Chloe sweets, right next to it.

Chickpea & Olive

If you are in Brooklyn and you are looking for a not so average vegan burger then chickpea & olive is the place to be. They have for example a Bacon Cheddar Ranch (hickory smoked eggplant bacon with v-cheddar cheese, butter pickles and fresh herb house-made ranch) or a Polish burger (Polka) with roasted mushrooms, slow cooked caramelized onions, pickled red onions and horseradish aioli. I went for a Pulled Jackfruit Burger because I never had one before. As such I can’t really compare it to any other pulled jackfruit burger, but this one was very delicious. Sweet, but absolutely not too sweet perfectly combined with the carolina slaw, butter pickles, fried shallots and horseradish aioli. All served on a potato bun.

Little Choc Apothecary

Although I had the best pancakes at by Chloe, my best crêpe ever was at the Little Choc Apothecary. It is New Yorks first 100% vegan creperie and it was heaven. The place looks amazing, the staff is super friendly and the menu was all a vegan foodie with a sweet tooth can wish for. So if you are in Williamsburg and you are in the mood for a gluten-free crêpe, go to Little Choc Apothecary. The atmosphere is relaxing, the smoothies are good, they serve both sweet and savory crêpes and they also have açaí bowls, muffins, scones and a wide variety of teas.

I asked what the secret is to make perfect vegan crêpes and the waitress told me they use a mixture of flours to create a taste where none of the flours is dominant.

I went for a sweet crêpe with what I think was a Dutch brand of ice cream (van Leeuwen). The savory options also seem amazing, such as the ”burrito” crêpe with avocado, coconut ”bacon”, black beans, hot sauce and cashew cheese. Or what about the vegan gluten free pizza crêpe with basil, tomato marinara and caramelized onion.

I would for sure go back for breakfast once because I would love to try their bowls too. Such as a peanut butter and berry chia jam bowl or their green bowl with spirulina and oats. Every bowl is topped with homemade granola, fruit and coconut yoghurt.

The Good Sort

A happy place that should be on your list when you are in Chinatown is The Good Sort. They are popular for their rainbow iced lattes with superfoods, but also their golden- and pink lattes will instantly make you happy.

The rainbow latte is layered with three colors, and packed with natural ingredients such as turmeric, beetroot, blue algae, vanilla bean, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and a blend of almond-, coconut-, and oat milk. It is sweetened up with coconut sugar, or agave and all together this makes a beautiful and delicious iced rainbow drink.

Vegan Hotspots in New York

They also serve purple açaí lattes and many other colorful superfood treats. Their food was also very good. I had a rice turmeric porridge with fruits and it was just what I needed for breakfast.

Juice Generation

There are many juice bars in New York, but one I absolutely love is Juice Generation. I remember how happy I was when I ordered their book some years ago written by Eric Helms (the founder of Juice Generation). There are many locations throughout New York, but they all serve amazing smoothies, juices and shots. I love their Juice Pharmacy where you can pick a juice or a shot for different type of little health issues such as a shot for when you have a cold, a vital shot or a wheatgrass shot. I always ask if they can mix this with my juice or smoothie. It’s so worth the extra few bucks!

abcV

Last but absolutely not least,  abcV. A hotspot that was not on my list but a suggestion I found in a newsletter from Well + Good. In this article Well + Good shared a list of all the best vegan restaurants in every state in the US. When I saw the menu of abcV I knew I needed to visit this place. The dish I was going before I even set foot into this place was their whole (or half) fried roasted cauliflower head (their most popular dish). Yes, I love cauliflower! The ambiance is a bit fancy, but not uncomfortable. The menu is created in a way that you ”need” to order three dishes to make a full meal, but I only went for the cauliflower because of all the food I already had eaten that day. It didn’t disappoint at all. The turmeric dressing was light and just perfect with the cauliflower and the roasted pistachios.

This picture is super blurry… Sorry!! It looked really amazing!

I think abcV brings vegan dining to a whole new level. If you like a bit of fancy vegan food abcV is a must visit when you are in New York. Another dish that seemed amazing was their green chickpea hummus.

New York was the best food trip I ever had as a vegan foodie (Warsaw is also amazing, although completely different). We stayed more than a week in New York City, but I could have easily stayed a month to discover all the city has to offer. New York is a dream for vegan foodies and I will for sure be back.

I hope you enjoyed my vegan healthy/junk food hotspots as much as I did. If you are heading to New York, I hope you will visit one of my hotspots (or more). Or maybe you have a hotspot that I need to add to my list? If so let me know in the comments, on Instagram or on Facebook.
