Description

This lemon ginger turmeric shot is a jamu shot, a traditional herbal tonic from Indonesia with turmeric and ginger that has been passed down from generation to generation. Make a big batch and enjoy this cold shot tonic all week long. With ice and extra lime this is the best summer drink!

Ingredients

Scale
  • ½ cup / about 120 ml fresh turmeric root juice ( juice from ¾ cup / about 45 gr fresh turmeric root)
  • ½ cup / about 120 ml fresh ginger root root juice ( juice from ¾ cup / about 45 gr fresh ginger root)
  • 6 cups / 1400 ml water
  • 1 cup / 230 ml warm water
  • 34 tablespoons maple syrup or coconut syrup or honey (for non-vegans)
  • juice of 1 big lemon or lime, add more if you wish

Instructions

  1. Slice the turmeric and ginger into small pieces (with skin) and juice. I’m using this slow juicer, but any juicer will do.
  2. Add a little bit of the water in this recipe to the juicer to extract more of the juice if necessary (it can get stuck).
  3. Place the juice in a jar.
  4. Add the sweetener to 1 cup warm water and stir to combine well. Add this to the jar. Fill the jar with water. Add in the lemon or lime juice too.
  5. Keep in the fridge and serve cold over ice.
  6. Or heat the tonic up and serve it warm.

Notes

For a cooling summer drink, add more ice and lime.

You could use a blender instead of a juicer. Make sure to use a cheese cloth or nut milk bag after blending to make this juice smooth without pieces.
