Tropical Matcha Smoothie

The other day I found a little package of matcha powder that I bought last year. Since it will almost expire, I wanted to use it up, but how do I use matcha powder daily? You can add matcha green tea powder to many recipes, such as raw vegan ice cream or sweet recipes, but I don’t eat that daily. What I do eat (drink) every day is a green smoothie. A tropical smoothie, to be precise, since I love to add frozen pineapple to my smoothies with these hot temperatures. Why not add matcha powder as well? A new smoothie was born: tropical matcha green smoothie.

Matcha Powder?

You might know that green tea is healthy because of the number of antioxidants. Well, let me introduce powdered green tea – also known as matcha. It makes sense that whole-leaf teas contain more antioxidants than tea bags or any ready-to-drink product. There are some reasonable indications that matcha powder contains more antioxidants than ordinary green tea. I find a warming matcha latte delicious, but not everyone can appreciate the taste. I think it all comes down to how matcha is prepared. A sweet ingredient such as (dried) fruit is a good way to make matcha a true treat.

The frozen banana in this recipe will create a lovely sweet, creamy base, and the pineapple and coconut water will elevate this smoothie to a tropical delight. Pineapple will also balance any matcha powder ”bitterness”. And, of course, the matcha powder adds great health benefits to any smoothie while giving it an earthy tea flavor.

Description

A delicious tropical green smoothie infused with matcha powder! Creamy, naturally sweet, uplifting and just as nourishing as it is delicious!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1,5 cup (130 grams) frozen pineapple
  • ¼ medium cucumber
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 tablespoon matcha green tea powder
  • 1/21 inch fresh ginger
  • 1 ¼ cup (140 ml) coconut water or normal water

Instructions

  1. Add frozen banana slices, pineapple, (coconut) water, 1/4 cucumber, ginger, and matcha powder to a blender and blend on high until creamy and smooth.
  2. Add only as much (coconut) water as you need to help it blend. I like smoothies that are not too thin but also not too thick. I like a smoothie to be thick yet still drinkable.
  3. Taste and adjust flavor as needed by adding more banana for sweetness and matcha for a more intense green tea flavor (be careful: adding more matcha powder adds more caffeine).
  4. Serve.

Notes

This smoothie is best when fresh, but you can keep this smoothie in an air-tight bottle (filled until the rim) in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
